The holiday season is tough for my family. I did not receive a formal education because I was in Farmville when the school system shut down, so I cannot read or write. It is hard for me to hold a higher paying job, because no one wants an employee that cannot read. I want to buy my grandkids gifts for Christmas and make them dinner and often that means shopping at the Dollar Store and going without food for myself leading up to the holidays so I can save up money.

My favorite memory from my childhood was helping my mom bake cookies, pie, mac ‘n’ cheese, and turkey for Christmas dinner. I can still smell the cookies, apple pie, and turkey cooking all day. Unfortunately, my husband got in a car accident and cannot work right now, because of this we are behind on rent and are being crushed by bills. I wish that I could give my children the same good memories of the holiday season that I had.
